I do some freelance work for a graphic designer friend who
isn't terribly
web saavy, so I end up being his HTML monkey and slice and
dice up all of
his projects for him into HTML and CSS.
One client of his is one of those 'knows enough to be
dangerous' clients and
has taken upon himself to pay Network Solutions (yikes!) for
consulting time
to help him with his search engine rankings. They advised him
that his site
is good, but he really needs to add in the proper Keyword
Meta Tags.
That seems like good advice...if this were 1997, but AFAIK,
it's pretty much
common knowledge these days that Google completely ignores
meta keyword
information.
I'm trying to find an article that my designer friend can
share with his
client to show him that he's getting screwed by netsol and
that they are not
giving good advice. Most articles I find, though, are circa
2001.
Anyone have a more recent and more definitive article on this
issue?
A secondary question is that it seems today's reasoning
suggests that meta
keyword tags are either a harmless waste of time (google
ignores it) or,
potentially much worse, a detriment to your site (with google
penalizing
you for it). The former isn't a huge deal (hey, I get paid by
the hour) but
the latter seems pretty bad if true. Any thoughts on that?

Keyword Meta Tags: definitive article?
id like to know as well, because my company hired a
consultant to find us similar information...%26gt;.%26lt;Keyword Meta Tags: definitive article?
I don't think there's any one definitive article, but I
recently put
together a brief reference list for a client, from a few
well-known and
respected sources. Below is what I sent my client as a short
reference
list.
As to your secondary question, I don't think a site is likely
to be
penalized for using the keywords tag, unless they engage in
the most extreme
sort of keyword stuffing. There are several sites in a niche
I follow that
have keyword tags containing, literally, several hundred
keywords -- and
those sites seem to be permanently parked in the top 10 in
that niche,
despite their egregious abuse of the keyword tag.
Keyword tag references:
http://www.seomoz.org/articles/bg4.php
''Meta tags once held the distinction of being the primary
realm of SEO
specialists. Today, the use of meta tags, particularly the
meta keywords
tag, has diminished to an extent that search engines no
longer use them in
their ranking of pages. However, the meta description tag can
still be of
some importance, as several search engines use this tag to
display the
snippet of text below the clickable title link in the results
pages.''
http://searchenginewatch.com/showPage.html?page=2167931
''Even those who are experienced in search engine optimization
may decide it
is no longer worth using the tags. Search Engine Watch
doesn't. Any meta
keywords tags you find in the site were written in the past,
when the
keywords tag was more important. There's no harm in leaving
up existing tags
you may have written, but going forward, writing new tags
probably isn't
worth the trouble.''
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Meta_tag
''Currently, Google does not use meta elements to index web
sites; however
Google will sometimes use text from the meta description in
search results
pages as the snippet of text that it displays, if terms
queried appear in
that description.''

One thing that is not mentioned anymore, but I believe was
true in the old
days, is that keywords data was used to ''give'' SE a list of
mispelled words
to consider. For example, if your site was
great-web-sights.com, you'd have:
greatwebsights,great_web_sights,greatwebsites,great-web-sites,etc.

Sonjay,
Thanks for the urls you provided. I find that very good
source of links. I know that some participants have asked similar
question about keyword and such at times.
Have a great weekend.
