local main.dwt template (which is the sidebar for all my GALEX
pages), saved it, and updated to the remote main.dwt template. When
I go to the remote site and view the main.dwt
file, my changes show up just fine. However, when I actually
look at my web page, the changes don't display. They look
like the old page - reload doesn't help. I have changed the
template successfully in the past; reading the book is like trying
to decipher Greek.
%26gt; saved it, and updated to the remote main.dwt template.
What does this mean? It sounds like you're changing a local
template and
then UPLOADING that template to the server - is that what you
are doing?
That's not how it works. Template changes ONLY affect local
files. It's
the changed local files that must then be uploaded to the
server, not the
changed template file.

%26gt;I am a relative newby to Dreamweaver. I made a change to
my local main.dwt
%26gt; template (which is the sidebar for all my GALEX pages),
saved it, and
%26gt; updated
%26gt; to the remote main.dwt template. When I go to the remote
site and view
%26gt; the
%26gt; main.dwt
%26gt; file, my changes show up just fine. However, when I

%26gt; web
%26gt; page, the changes don't display. They look
%26gt; like the old page - reload doesn't help. I have changed
the template
%26gt; successfully in the past; reading the book is like
trying to decipher
%26gt; Greek.
%26gt;
Updated templates
At the risk of really sounding thick, I edited the main.dwt
file locally. Using the file dropdown I saved it, then using the
file
dropdown again I ''save to remote site'' I then got a a box
which said ''Update all files based on this template?'' I indicated
yes. It gave me a recap - 84 files, 1 changed. It then put up
a box called update pages with a dropdown ''look in'' with 2 choices,
Files that use and Entire site (with ''main'' out to the side. 2
check boxes below Update - Library items and Templates. I have
looked at many of the files on the remote site and the correct
sidebar info is there on all of them.
But when I bring up the GALEX web site on my browser, the
side bar items are still the old ones
You must upload the local files that are changed by the
changes you have
made to the template. DW's template engine ONLY changes local
files. If
you carefully watch the sequence of prompts, you'll see that
the prompt to
update files occurs AFTER you save the template locally, and
BEFORE you save
to the server. Updating child pages requires DW. There is no
DW on the
server.
%26gt; I have looked at many of the files on the remote site
and
%26gt; the correct sidebar info is there on all of them.
I believe this is just impossible.

I'm sorry to push this, but I don't think it is impossible. I
have a word file with clips of 1-local main.dwt file, 1-remote
main.dwt file, and 1 of the WEB Site opening page. I could sent it
to you if that would prove it.
I have gone back to the local main.dwt page, removed a letter
then replaced it so I could ''save'' it, it then prompted me with
''Update all files based on this template?'' I responded with
''update'' I then got a prompt to ''update pages.'' to which it's
response was 85 looked at, none changed. I exited that window and
under File, clicked on ''save to remote server'' which
responded with a ''Save Files'' box, with Templates in the Save
In drop down box, and a list of files in the Templates folder;
listed there were Main.dwt and Main.dwt.lck, index.html and
index.html.lck, main-cycle2.dwt.lck and a few others - also with
.lck extensions. when I click ''save'', it tells me ''a file with that
name exists and is locked''. I cannot remove the .lck extensions
unless I go to the remote site via WinSCP. I was able to delete the
.lck files. When I went back to the ''save to the remote server it
allowed me to save, but the WEB SITE STILL did not show the revised
sidebar.

Template changes only affect local files. Period. That's just
the way it
is. For template changes to propagate to other files, you
must be running
DW. There is no way to run DW on the server.

If you have 85 pages on your site, you probably shouldn't be
using templates
anyway.
Look into CSS and SSI. that way you CAN change just one file,
upload it to
your server and it will instantly change EVERY file in your
site.
And don't bother to argue with Murray. He knows more about
how DW works
than the developers do... Pay attention to what he is saying
and understand
it. Franbkly you should NEVER upload your DWT file to your
remote server.
Period.
What you are doing won't work.

Hardly! I can only hope to not make so many mistakes in the
future!
