Hi,
I’m new to html editing and I’m using dreamweaver
8. I’ve downloaded a pre-set template design and altered it
by putting
my details on the logo etc… What I have read in the
help files within dreamweaver is that if you set up a template it
will change/update any pages that is base around that template for
example I’ve set up a template called mainpage.dwt and if I
create any html pages from that template and lets say I add a link
in the navigation bar or change a background colour to the
mainpage.dwt, it will update the pages made from that template
instead of updating the pages manually myself….correct?
So in the template I’ve created a editable region just
for the content because that’s all I need to change, The
trouble I’m having is if I open that mainpage.dwt edit the
content and click “save as” whatever.html, that’s
not going to update my links etc.. Is it? And pointless creating an
editable region because I’ve basically just copied the design
and layout. So dreamweaver help files say’s to go to
“file”--“new”—“templates
tab”—pick the site you want—pick the template you
want (Which is my mainpage.dwt), so when I do that I car`t edit
anything other than the editable region I created earlier which is
what I wanted BUT all the images are missing like the logo and
background colour and I don’t not how to get them there??
Been scratching my head over this! I’ve checked that
the image source is set to document root and not site root (I think
this is right?). So in the mainpage.dwt the images are displayed,
the html page I create based on the template does not display the
images and when I try to preview the html page in the browsers (IE,
Firefox) that also does not display the images. I have the my pages
set out like this, this is just a test site so the “local
root folder” is called Test Site and all the files are under
that and the default image folder is under that (which I created)
called “images” but there are no template images under
that, there in another folder called “templates” (which
I created). Am I doing this right so far??
Site Layout:
Test Site
- _notes (don’t know what this is but dreamweaver
keeps putting them in the folders)
dwsync.xml
- images
(Just images that are within the site)
- links
(Just the different pages from the navigation bar)
- Templates
-_notes
dwsync.xml
- img
_notes
menubar.jpg
background.jpg
etc…..
- source
_notes
blanklogo.jpg
mylogo.jpg
style.css
index.html (come with the template but I don’t use
it.)
mainpage.dwt
index.html
So if anyone could help it would be much appreciated.
Thanks

%26gt; it will update the pages made from that template instead
of
%26gt; updating the pages manually myself?.correct?
Yes, provided that your changes were made to NON-EDITABLE
regions of the
template page. It's only those changes that are propagated to
the child
pages.
%26gt; and click ?save as? whatever.html,
This is the wrong way to use templates. What you do is to
make the
template the way you want the base layout to be, then you
spawn child pages
from the template using FILE | New %26gt; Templates %26gt; Site
name %26gt; template name %26gt;
Create. Now you add your page-specific content to the child
page. Your
method will get you into deep trouble.
%26gt; so when I do that I car`t
%26gt; edit anything other than the editable region I created
earlier which is
%26gt; what I
%26gt; wanted BUT all the images are missing like the logo and
background colour
%26gt; and I
%26gt; don?t not how to get them there??
Save the page and watch the images appear.
And - there should be NOTHING in your templates folder except
the templates
themselves. So -
%26gt; - img
%26gt; _notes
%26gt; menubar.jpg
%26gt; background.jpg
%26gt; etc?..
%26gt; - source
%26gt; _notes
%26gt; blanklogo.jpg
%26gt; mylogo.jpg
%26gt; style.css
%26gt; index.html (come with the template but I don?t use
%26gt; it.)
Get this out of there using DW's Files panel to move them.

Missing images in template
Hi Murray,
Thanks for the quick response. I managed to sort it out, I
moved the files you told me to move and did what you said but the
images still wasn’t there. So I looked at the code for the
mainpage.dwt (which I should of done in the 1st place) and found it
was looking for the images in the wrong directory, so I just
changed the document root in the code and there now there, but
thanks for the help and advise.
BUT!! :-)
When I try to add content to the editable region using ''copy
/ paste'' method I get an error ''making this change would require
changing code that is locked by a template or a translator. The
change will be discarded'' but I CAN “manually type'' in the
editable region without a problem, just car`t ''copy/paste'' for some
reason? Any ideas?
Improper links are the symptom of an improper site
definition. I would not
score this first issue as solved yet.
%26gt; When I try to add content to the editable region using
''copy / paste''
%26gt; method I
%26gt; get an error ''making this change would require changing

Either you are pasting in bad code, or your page already
contains bad code
to begin with. Any error on the page at the time you make the
change will
cause that message to be thrown. Let's see the page.
