Trouble linking exe files

Yet another dilemma with my CD project. I published the first
project file (of 9 separate projects) as a standalone .exe file
with an autostart file to burn to cd. I set the END to open another
.exe file. When I view output, it fails to open the second .exe
file. It opens a browser window and says it can't find the .exe
file. All project file names are only 8 characters, so that isn't
an issue. But it shouldn't try to open the .exe file in a browser
window, should it? Is there any reason I can't publish all the 9
projects as standalone .exe files and link them to one
another?Trouble linking exe files
Hi deidrelynn

You are overthinking it. Instead of using the option ''Open
URL or File'', opt instead for the option ''Open other project''. Then
browse to the next project and select it.

Trouble linking exe files
But I thought if you were burning to a CD for distribution,
the best way to do that was to create stand alone .exe files? How
can someone who doesn't have Captivate insert the CD and watch
it?
Hi deidrelynn

Sounds like you may be a bit confused.

You said:

It's not Captivate that's needed. Instead, it's the Flash
player. Most modern browsers are already capable of playing Flash
content. .EXE output is often used ''Just in case'', as it includes
the Flash Player wrapped up inside the .EXE. Additionally, it makes
kicking off the process via autorun.inf a little easier, as
autorun.inf looks for an executable file type to launch.

Sure, .EXE output is probably a safer choice here,
particularly when deploying via CD.

When you use the ''Open other project'' option I mentioned, it
shouldn't matter whether your output files exist as .SWF or .EXE.
They should be found and work just fine.

yes, of course. Not enough coffee yet this morning. :)
But I guess I still don't know why, when I set my open file
to point to another .exe file, it is failing to open it? Will the
entire project act differently once burned to a CD?? I am sorry if
I am being stupid here, but I have never done this before and it
seems to me that it should just be simple...one exe file opens the
next and the next and so on.
Hi again

There is a substantial difference in the way Captivate treats
the commands ''Open URL or File'' VS ''Open other project''. This is
why I suggested following the ''Open other project'' route. It should
work where I believe you were saying that the ''Open URL or File''
was failing.

Thanks Rick. One last question and I will put this project
away! What do you think the chances are of a viewer having any
issues playing the swf file? I know most computers have built in
Flash players. I am saving all these as Flash 7.
Hi again

By and large, I would think you should be fine. There will
always be users that are using older versions of the player and
whatnot. For those, you will always have to probably instruct to
upgrade the player.

Hello. Further to this topic of burning files to a CD...

I have been instructed to use .exe files from the powers that
be. I have 9 captivate files that I have exported as stand alone
exe files. I simply want to burn them to a CD and have each one
follow the next automatically, which I have set to do in the End.
But after the frist one plays, it tries to open the next one in a
browser window. Why is that? Nowhere do I have a setting to open
anything in a browser. I expected it to just automatically open the
next .exe and play. Can anybody help me?
Hello again

Okay, one more time. How are you linking? Are you using the
''Open URL or File'' or are you using ''Open other project''?

I'm guessing it's ''Open URL or File''. If so, please re-read
this thread, as I tried to explain how it works back on 5/10.

Post back if you are still confused.

Cheers... Rick

I'm sorry. I am confused. I thought you could only link .cp
files using ''link other project''. I didn't realize I could link
.exe that way. I will try.
I must be misunderstanding you Rick. When I select link to
other project I can only select another .cp project. HOw does that
help me link all the .exe files together???? Very confused. I need
this CD to be a series of .exe files to run with no problems for
the viewer. I guess I just don't get something here.
Hi deidrelynn

Indeed, the appearance is that you are linking to the .CP
file. Don't let that mislead you! What happens in the end is that
If the linked to project can be found, whether it exists in
.SWF or .EXE output, the link should work!

Give it a try. Watch and be amazed.

Cheers... Rick

Hmmm. Okay. So does the first show I publish, with an atuorun
file, have to be a stand alone .exe and the rest just link to
another project. Or should I just publish ALL of them with Link to
Other project?
