When the company I work for first set up our web site, the
site was hosted
at Interland and we used their DNS. We later moved on to
hosting the site on
our own server, and we used the DNS from the T1 provider
(Time Warner
Wisconsin).
We want to add a new ''A record'' to the domain for eventual
VPN access by
employees (rather than make them remember the IP address),
and I am reminded
of how user unfriendly TW is. You have to email a request for
DNS changes to
them as a ''zone listing'' text file (
http://info.twtelecom.net/info.php?id=10
) from the contact email address
listed on the account. You have to send the data for the
entire record to
them, not just the changes to it. They have no online
interface to walk you
through changes to the DNS record.
I noticed that our domain registrar (Network Solutions)
offers free DNS, so
I am unclear on why we chose to use TW's service instead.
Either we thought
we were required to, we were told by TW that we were required
to, we really
are required to, or they just set it up that way for us when
the service was
first purchased.
Is there any reason why we need to use the T1's DNS over
another?
Is Network Solutions reliable for DNS?
If we decide to change from TW to NS, will there be any
interrruption of our
web or email traffic during the propagation? (the server will
not be going
offline or having it's IP address changed)

No reason I can think of, reliability might be the only
thing. Depending on
the new DNS provider, their servers may not be as reliable as
the one you're
currently with.

Haven't done anything with them.

In theory there shouldn't be any downtime, but there might be
a slight one
as the DNS replicate info as to your DNS change.

I use ZoneEdit (
http://zoneedit.com/) for a few
domains, and haven't had
any problems with them. There are a number of other free DNS
companies.
